With Spring finally here, all the Spring wardrobe content is coming in full force (mine included). As entertaining as it may be, it is easily a time to feel overwhelmed with where to start and what to pick.
I’ve previously spoken about knowing which trends are for you, understanding how to make sure you’re buying items that work for you and finding your uniform is essentially the next step.
What’s a uniform?
For my UK lot, most of us are familiar with wearing uniforms for a good chunk of our childhood and formative years as it’s what we wore to school. And for the rest of readers you’ll still be familiar with uniforms in the context of work, the Army, entertainment etc. In this context, however, having a uniform means having a selection of pieces that you know work together but more importantly make you feel good! There are so many versatile combinations you can have but it will again depend on your style, what makes you comfortable and what works with your lifestyle.
Simplify your day-to-day
You wake up 20 minutes before you need to leave the house, the last thing I’d assume you want to do is spend any time at all trying to work out what to wear. But okay, let’s say you’re a timely person and that’s just not your story. Having a style uniform can save time, help you make decisions when purchasing new pieces and can also save money. Not only are there financial benefits, but there can also be emotional benefits.
Having to choose what to wear every day can be taxing and can encourage that feeling of not having enough to wear which we all know is a downward spiral. Your uniform will give you options without there being an endless list of decisions to make.
Your uniform doesn’t have to be boring
There are so many possible combinations when considering what your uniform will be, and there’s nothing to say you can’t have more than one uniform. For me, my top two are boots and a dress or wide-leg trousers, shoes and a top. They will always be my go-to hence, I have a selection of wide-leg bottoms and shoes on standby. The other part to remember is you can accessorise and build on your uniform in any way you want to on the day.
Below are different ways you can explore or build your style uniform:
Start with the pieces you love - Use these as bases for your outfit overall i.e. your favourite bottoms and rotate the tops/ the rest of the outfit accordingly
Wear what you know works - Instead of using this as a moment to experiment pick what works. What do you usually gravitate towards? You can either document this or pick based on what you remember.
Pick your favourite colours - I’d pick a selection of 2/3 colours and go from there. Are you a neutral person? Do you love colour? Or maybe you’ve taken it one step further and done your colour analysis. Rotating your outfits around colour hopefully gives you a variation of items whilst keeping it simple.
Pick what you’ve seen - Whether it’s on Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube (Hey) etc. replicating what you see could be another way to explore. Pick what works for you from what you see and start there
You’ll always look good
This is you creating a signature style and giving yourself a style formula that means you’ll always look good regardless of the day, time or place AND you can dress it up or make it casual. For example, my uniform can be executed in different ways:
Wide leg jeans + sweatshirt = cosy, lazy days
Wide leg jeans + crop top = casual chic
Wide leg trousers + shirt = Suit vibes
Wide leg trousers + crop top = smart, casual and playful
wide leg trousers + sweatshirt = casual workwear
The above doesn’t even consider, co-ords, colours and texture which can also add to the variations you can play with.
The confidence I hope a uniform will give you is also second to none. Remember you can have multiple uniforms for different parts of your life - work, dates, gym, brunch etc.
Above all, ‘deinfluence’ your wardrobe and pick what works for you. This is you embracing your style, making your life easier and remembering to take it and make it yours.
